Dressing the bridesmaids 101:

‘One size doesn’t fit all’ when it comes to choosing dresses for varying body types

You want each of your bridesmaids to feel confident and beautiful on your wedding day, without having to compromise your own vision for the bridesmaids’ dresses.  Here’s how you can find a dress that all your bridesmaids will look good in:

Choose a ¾-length sleeve  This length works well for bridesmaids of every height and age.

Choose an A-line silhouette  The A-line silhouette is a classic for a reason: most women look great in it. The only body type that may require tailoring with this style is an apple shape. An A-line style with a higher waist will work for this bridesmaid.

Flatter with a classic sheath dress  This more streamlined style is actually quite flattering for most body types, especially one with a just-below-the-knee hemline. For most women, this is the narrowest part of their leg and the dress will actually make a woman’s limbs appear longer. Of course, the tallest and most petite bridesmaids may have to tailor a bit to find the ideal length.

Structure is a girl's best friend  Sturdier fabric and a dress design with internal structure are more flattering than flimsy, gauzy fabric with relaxed construction.

Choose one shade from head to toe  A solid, monochromatic statement lengthens and streamlines your figure, no matter what the shade. Also, look for styles where the fabric is matte, not shiny or iridescent.

Look for 'separates'  By wearing separates, your bridesmaids will be able to find something that fits them perfectly. And if there is one thing that flatters more than anything else does, it’s a proper fit.

Don't drown her in fabric  Princess skirts and layers with yards of extra fabric add bulk, instead of concealing it. Look for a skirt that skims her body. It will conceal her less-than-favorite features and put the focus on her hourglass proportions.

Look for subtle design features  Vertical stripes, ruching at the waist and slits to the knee are all flattering design features, no matter what the body type. If all of your bridesmaids have a similar shape but it’s a difficult one to shop for, find features that will flaunt their best assets.

Flatter with high-low hemlines  These flirty adaptations to the traditional long dress can be so much fun to wear. They also let your ladies show off killer shoes. An at-the-knee hemline is best for everyone, but if you have petite bridesmaids, the best pairing for this dress is a pair of nude pumps without ankle straps to visually lengthen her legs.
